Everything CDL drivers need to know
A DOT physical exam is a mandatory medical examination for commercial motor vehicle drivers under FMCSA regulations (49 CFR Part 391).

CDL drivers must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses, and a field of vision of at least 70 degrees. For hearing, you must perceive a forced whispered voice from at least 5 feet with or without hearing aids.
Most CDL drivers renew every 2 years. Drivers with certain conditions like controlled hypertension may receive a 1-year certificate and must provide a copy to their state DMV within 7 days if operating interstate.
Stage 3 hypertension (180/110+) results in temporary disqualification. Stage 1 and 2 can still be certified.
No fasting required. A urine sample is collected but no fasting needed.
Standard certificates are valid for 24 months. Drivers with certain conditions may receive shorter certifications.
